Where PCF holders come from: compliance experience, Big 4 and the regulator

Hands-on compliance experience is the strongest predictor of a PCF career in Ireland. A Big 4 or Central Bank background is not. Nexus Search compared professionals in its network with careers of ten years or more, looking only at experience before their first PCF role.

Raw numbers like these can mislead, because backgrounds overlap. A model that weighs them together, allowing for career length, gives a clearer picture. A compliance role multiplies the odds of a PCF career by about five. Big 4 experience adds nothing measurable once the work people did there is counted. Regulator experience points the right way, at about twice the odds, but the sample is too small to be sure. Sales or business roles halve the odds.

Big 4 alumni do become PCF holders more often than average. They get there because they did compliance, risk or audit work, not because of the firm name.

How long it takes

The median time from first job to first PCF role is 16 years, with the middle half between about 11 and 22 years. It varies by role.

Big 4 alumni took 15.2 years against 16.5 for everyone else, a gap that is not meaningful. Regulator alumni took 16.2 years, the same as everyone else. Professionals who started their careers outside financial services took 18.6 years against 14.3, a clear difference.

Regulator alumni reached their first PCF a median 3.8 years after leaving the regulator, and about 70% went into compliance or risk roles.

Moving between PCF roles

The common moves from one PCF type to another stay inside control functions: AML to compliance is the most frequent, followed by CRO to compliance, compliance to AML, CRO to AML and compliance to CRO. CEOs who take on another PCF most often become NEDs. Fewer than one in ten CEOs (7%) had previously held a compliance or CRO role.

What this means for hiring

For a control function PCF, depth of hands-on compliance, risk or audit work is a better guide than the brand of past employers. Insisting on a Big 4 or regulator background narrows the field without, on this evidence, improving it.

About the data

Career histories across the entire Nexus Search network, data to February 2026. One network, not every PCF holder in Ireland. Early careers are sometimes missing from CVs, so years to first PCF are minimums. The full method is in the report.
